Discovery Fridays

Fridays during full weeks of school are special days for our Kindergarten kids.  This is a special time, set aside, where the children have the chance to explore our natural world.  We spend time outside, in all types of weather, to learn how to question and observe the world around us.   We use all of our senses to learn about plants, animals, rocks, worms, and weather, and much more!

Discovery Fridays

Weeks that we are in school every day, we celebrate Discovery Fridays.  This is an extra special time that is set aside for the children to explore the natural world we live in.

The Kindergarten spends time outside, in most types of weather, learning how we question and observe the world surrounding us that we are a part of.

We spend time using all of our senses to learn about the natural world; including plants and animals, weather, bugs and worms, rocks and dirt, weather, and so much more.

Be sure your student is with us for these special Discovery Fridays!!

Author of the Day

With writing and creativity being so important in our world, we hold "Author of the Day" celebrations several times across the school year.  These days allow your student the opportunity to stand and tell their story in front of the class on their own.  Kindergarteners will be able to share a true story, or something they have created or adapted themselves.

The children love this part of our Kindergarten activities as they become the class focus, allowing their classmates to learn about them in a uniquely different and exciting way!

Hello Parents/Guardians!!

My name is Seth Tieden (pronounced Tea-den), your student will likely refer to me as Mr. T.  It is with great pride and excitement that I right this biography, introducing myself to the district and you all.  I am a 2012 graduate of SCSU with a licensure for teaching Kindergarten through sixth grade.  I have previously guided classes through the rigors of Kindergarten, Second grade, and Fourth grade, as well as some Title 1 work and various substituting positions.

In my personal life, I love spending time with my son Simon and my cat Lola.  We enjoy spending time together gardening, riding mountain bikes and motorcycle, and especially learning new things together.  We are hoping to let everyone see how excited we are for being a part of the Isle school district this year, and are highly interested in relocating closer this coming summer with an offer to return to the district.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have an questions, concerns, or ideas that will help to give our Kindergarteners the best opportunities we can for their futures!

Thank you for your time,

Mr. T

The Kinder-gardens

Our Kindergarteners get to experience gardening!

With the provided garden beds, your growing student will get to dig in the dirt, try planting seeds, practice weeding, and simply observing our gardens grow.

In the fall, we plant tulip bulbs in anticipation of watching them break the ground and sprout in the Spring.  It's SO EXCITING for the now blossomed Kindergarteners to see the results of the work they did so long ago!!

In the Spring, we get to explore the freshly exposed garden beds again, spending time weeding, transplanting our flowers to take home, and planting this year's crop of vegetables.

It is so exciting to see the joy and surpise on the students' faces as their plants begin to grow and they learn the requirements to keep a plant alive and healthy!!  We also spend time discussing the importance of weather in the life of a plant, as well as other factors that contribute to growth of a plant, just like your growing learner!

The Importance of Play!!

We all need to play.

At Nyquist Elementary, we believe in the importance and power of playing and enjoying the ways we learn and play together.

If we can have a Math or Reading lesson outside, we will.

If we can act out a learning concept, we act it out.

If we can learn something better by doing hands-on activities, we do.

It is a priority for Kindergarten to be about having interesting, fun, playful learning.  Growing minds and bodies at this age learn best through playing and observing others play.

It is of the utmost importance for our futures that we play!!
